What Is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist, or a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), is a specialist who provides comprehensive diagnoses and treatments for all foot and ankle problems. A podiatrist must attain a four-year undergraduate degree, and also attend graduate school for a doctorate in podiatric medicine. Podiatrists are required to complete post-graduate residency programs, pass state and national exams, and become licensed by the state where they practice.

According to the American Podiatric Association, podiatrists are in increased demand because disorders of the foot and ankle are among the most widespread and neglected health problems of Americans.

When to Call a Podiatrist:

  • If You Have Persistent Pain in Your Feet or Ankles
  • If You Have Noticeable Changes in Your Nails or Skin
  • If Your Feet Are Severely Cracking, Scaling, or Peeling
  • If There Are Blisters on Your Feet
  • If Your Toenails Are Getting Thicker and Causing You Any Discomfort
  • If You Have Diabetes
  • If There Are Signs of Bacterial Infection, Including:
      - Increased Pain, Swelling, Redness, Tenderness, or Heat
      - Discharge of Pus
      - Fever of 100°F (37.78°C) or Higher with No Other Cause
      - Symptoms That Do Not Improve After Two Weeks of Treatment
        with a Non-Prescription Product
      - Spreading of the Infection to Other Areas, Such as the Nail Bed,
the  Nail Itself, or the Surrounding Areas of the Nail
